Hot take: figuring out a decent crumb coat took me 9 months

I kept seeing these perfect smooth cakes online and thought I just needed a better spatula or colder frosting. Turns out my crumb coat was WAY too thick and I was trying to smooth it in one pass like a maniac. It took me nine months of ugly, streaky cakes before I realized you have to do a thin layer, chill it for 15 minutes, THEN do the final layer with a hot offset spatula. Nobody tells you that in the recipe comments. I also had to watch like 4 different videos from people in the UK who swear by a turntable instead of a lazy Susan. Has anyone else spent months on something this basic and felt stupid when it finally clicked?
