My great aunt's pound cake recipe failed at the county fair last August

I entered my great aunt's pound cake in the county fair baking contest last August, same recipe she used for 40 years. The judges said it was too dry and crumbly, and I got a 6th place ribbon out of 10 entries. Turns out I used a convection oven instead of a regular one, and I never adjusted the temperature or time. Has anyone else had a trusted family recipe flop because of a different type of oven?

I read that altitude changes can mess with baking recipes more than people expect.
