My sourdough starter looked perfect for 3 months then turned gray overnight

I fed my starter every day for 3 months and it was bubbly and smelled like yogurt. Then last Tuesday I opened the jar and it had this grayish liquid on top and smelled like nail polish remover. I threw out half and fed it twice a day for 2 days straight. It finally came back to normal on Thursday. Has anyone else had a starter freak out like that for no obvious reason?

My starter did the same thing back in February after 4 months of perfect behavior, turned gray and smelled like a chemistry lab. I swear my starters have more drama than my own life sometimes. Yours bouncing back in 2 days is actually pretty good, mine took a full week and a lot of pleading.
