A customer yelled at me for using the wrong payment terminal

I work at a small coffee shop downtown. Last Tuesday a lady slammed her card on the counter and said I picked the wrong machine for her chip. She wanted the one with the tap feature. I always just grabbed whatever was closest. That day I paid attention and realized three out of four machines had different fee structures for the shop. The one with tap costs us an extra 15 cents per swipe. My manager never told me. Now I guide every customer to the plain chip reader first. Has anyone else had a customer call out a hidden cost like that?

Wait, are you saying the shop gets charged differently per machine? I used to think all payment terminals were basically the same for the business, just different ways for customers to pay... but that extra 15 cents really adds up over hundreds of swipes. I've had a customer snap at me for not offering the tap option fast enough, but I never questioned the cost behind it until now. Makes me wonder what else stores hide from the people working the counter, you know?

Bet those fees are way smaller than what they lose if they didn't take cards at all.
