Heard a teller tell a customer that debit cards are safer than credit cards

I was at a Wells Fargo in Denver last week and overheard a teller tell an older lady that debit cards are safer because 'you can't spend what you don't have.' Is that really the takeaway after all the stories about people getting their checking accounts drained and fighting for weeks to get their money back?

that teller clearly hasn't had their debit card info stolen before" - yeah that's the thing, I used to think debit was safer too because no interest. But after hearing how long it takes to get your real money back vs just disputing a credit charge, I completely changed my mind.
