Hit 1,000,000 pennies in my spare change jar, here is what it taught me about payments
So I've been tossing every penny I get into this old pickle jar for about 4 years now. Last Tuesday my wife finally convinced me to count it all, we rolled everything and took it to the coin counter at our local PNC branch. The machine said 1,000,000 pennies, which is $10,000 in coins. I honestly thought it was maybe $600. But the weird part was watching people in line stare at me like I was insane, and then the teller told me some banks actually charge non-customers up to 12% to process coin deposits. It made me realize how much friction there is in even the most basic payment methods, we all just accept these fees and delays without thinking. Has anyone else ever gotten blindsided by a small amount of money adding up way faster than you expected? What did you do with it? I'm still deciding between a vacation or just transferring it straight to my high yield savings, feels like a dumb problem to have but I'll take it.
