Hot take: I switched from a big bank to a local credit union for my main checking
I got tired of the $12 monthly fee at my old bank just to keep my account open. Last week, I opened a checking account at First Community Credit Union here in town. The process was quick, and they don't charge a fee if I keep at least $500 in the account. So far, the mobile app works fine for deposits and transfers. Anyone else made a switch like this and noticed better service?

That $12 fee is pretty standard though, and $500 is still a chunk of cash to keep locked up.

You know what gets missed in these talks, @lewis.charlie, is how that "standard" fee adds up over a year. It's not just one twelve dollar hit. That's a whole streaming service subscription you're paying just to have your own money held. Locking up five hundred bucks feels bad enough without a slow drip making it worse.

Right? At this point I'm just paying a monthly subscription to access my own paycheck like it's some kind of premium app. Next they'll ask for a tip before they let me withdraw my cash.
