I finally figured out why my bank was charging me $12 a month for 'account maintenance'
I was sitting at a Chase branch in downtown Austin last week waiting to close my account. The teller pulled up my history and asked why I kept the account open for 3 years with a monthly fee. I told her I just thought that was normal. She pointed out I could have switched to a free checking option the whole time. Has anyone else just accepted stupid fees without questioning them for way too long?

Bro for real! I used to think bank fees were just part of having an account, like a tax for having money or something. Then my buddy called me out for paying $15 a month at Wells Fargo and it clicked - I was just throwing away cash for no reason. I switched to a credit union and haven't looked back since. It's wild how we just accept stuff like that without thinking, but now I check all my bills every few months to make sure I'm not getting ripped off. Glad you caught on too, that $12 adds up fast over time.

My cousin was paying $18/month for years before someone told her. Wild, right?
