The fee dispute that ended with a handshake and a receipt

Had a guy come into the branch six months ago, furious about a $35 overdraft fee he said he never should have hit. He had a point, the charge posted two days after he deposited cash, so the system flagged it as insufficient when it should have cleared. I walked him through the timeline on my screen, and he calmed down once he saw I wasn't just reading a script. We reversed the fee, but then he asked me how the bank actually made money on checking accounts, so I showed him our fee schedule and interest spread on a napkin. He laughed and said he'd been a customer for 12 years and never once asked that question. We shook hands, and he left with a copy of the schedule and his original receipt. Has anyone else had a customer flip from angry to curious once you pull back the curtain on how fees really work? That moment stuck with me more than any other interaction this year.
