A client's comment about texture made me rethink my whole approach

Had a regular client, older guy, been coming to me for about 5 years on and off. Last Tuesday after his cut he said, "You know, you're the first barber who didn't just buzz it all the same length. But you still treat my hair like it's 20 years old." That stung because he was right. I realized I'd been using the same fade pattern and thinning technique I learned in barber school back in 2012, never adjusting for how hair changes with age or seasons. Since then I've started asking every client over 50 about their hair's texture in humidity and how it dries after a shower before I even pick up clippers. Anyone else find they had to unlearn their early training to serve older guys better, or am I the only one who got stuck in a rut?
