Heard a barber at the shop down the street say he never uses clipper guards past a 3, just freehands everything

That blew my mind because I've been stacking guards for years and fight uneven spots all the time. Talked to him for 10 minutes and he showed me his fade on a walk-in, clean as anything I've done. Any of you freehand your fades or is he just showing off?
