Hot take: I stopped using clippers on the sides for a taper and my fades got cleaner in 2 weeks
I did skin fades with clippers only for about 6 years. Last month a guy named Ray who has been cutting in Philly for 22 years showed me he does the whole taper with just scissors and a comb, no clipper at all. I thought he was nuts, but he said the clipper is too fast and grabs too much at once near the edge. I tried it on 3 customers the next week and two of them said the fade felt softer. It takes me maybe 10 extra minutes but I am not fighting the line anymore. Anyone here cut tapers with shears only, or am I making this harder than it needs to be?
Freehand shear work on a taper is legit, the clipper does bite too hard right at the edge line and that is exactly where guys get the harsh line. Ten extra minutes is nothing if you are not going back over the same spot fighting it. Just make sure your shears are sharp and you keep the comb flat so you do not gouge it.
