TIL a quick trick for dealing with thick neck hair on a fade

Had a client yesterday with really dense, coarse hair at the back of his neck. My clippers kept skipping and leaving patches, even with a fresh blade. On a whim, I tried holding the skin taut with my free hand and going against the grain with my trimmer on a zero gap setting. It cleaned up in one pass, no irritation. I'd always gone with the grain before and just dealt with multiple passes. Has anyone else found going against works better for certain hair types, or did I just get lucky this time?

That "going against the grain" thing reminds me of my grandpa, who used a safety razor on his neck every single morning.
