Unpopular opinion: clipper over comb is overrated for most fades

I spent 6 months trying to perfect clipper over comb for my skin fades (you know, like every barber on YouTube swears by) and kept getting uneven lines near the crown. Switched to a freehand method with my Wahl Magic Clip and a light touch last Tuesday, and the blend came out smoother in half the time with no harsh steps. Has anyone else ditched the comb for freehand on tight fades or am I missing something?

Man freehand with a Magic Clip is exactly how you mess up a fade if you don't have steady hands and years of practice. Clipper over comb gives you control and consistency every time.

Yeah I've been there too. Freehand with a Magic Clip is fine for blending but trying to drop a fade that way is asking for trouble. Clipper over comb like @williams.amy said keeps things straight when you're working on the back of someone's head.
