Friendswood library sale and the guy with the tote bag full of cookbooks

I heard a man at the Friendswood library sale last Saturday bragging that he only buys cookbooks with glossy photos, and he skipped every single one that had stained pages or a missing dust jacket. That struck me as backwards because the stained ones are usually the ones with handwritten notes and the actual recipes people swear by. Has anyone else found that the beat-up copies end up being the better reads, or am I just accumulating other folks' kitchen messes?

My grandma's Joy of Cooking looks like a crime scene and it's got three generations of margin notes in it, those are the real gold. Glossy photos don't tell you if the cake actually works, but a splatter stain on page 214 sure does lol.
