Had to pick between two book lots at a library sale last weekend

I was at the Friends of the Library sale in my town, and there were these two boxes. One had a bunch of old Stephen King paperbacks for $5, the other had a mix of classic sci-fi like Asimov and Clarke for $8. I only had $10 on me, so I grabbed the sci-fi box. Turned out the Asimov book had a signed bookplate inside, which I never expected. Has anyone else lucked out on a gamble like that?

Glad you grabbed the sci-fi box, that sounds like a total steal. I once found a first edition of Dune tucked in a random pile at a church sale for a dollar, still can't believe it. It's wild what people just donate without checking, you never know what's hiding in those boxes.

The signed bookplate thing is a solid score. I had a similar thing happen at a Salvation Army once, found a really beat up copy of Slaughterhouse-Five with a pressed flower inside from the 1970s. Somebody's grandma probably just cleaned out a closet and never looked. That Asimov box for eight bucks is better than anything you get on eBay now. Book sales are the only place left where you can still find that kind of hidden treasure.
