My library sale rule about hardcovers backfired, and I lost out
A volunteer at the Springfield library sale told me to always skip hardcovers under $1 because they're usually torn or water damaged. I listened for three years and passed on a first edition mystery novel priced at 50 cents. Last month I flipped through it at a friend's house and found it was worth around $80 online. Now I check every hardcover spine and page edge, even the cheap ones. Has anyone else trusted a shortcut tip and later regretted it?

So you missed out on 80 bucks after three years of skipping beat up hardcovers. That stings, sure, but let's be real here. Most of those cheap hardcovers are still going to be junk, and you probably saved yourself a lot of time and shelf space by not hauling them home. Plus, one lucky find out of hundreds of skipped books is not exactly a pattern. It's more like you hit the opposite of the lottery one time. Next you'll be telling me you regret not buying every scratch off ticket because someone won big once. Just flip through the cheap ones when you're bored, but don't beat yourself up over a missed bargain.
