Shoutout to the $8 atlas that changed my road trip planning

I used to swear by my phone maps for everything, then last spring I picked up a 1998 road atlas at a garage sale in Dayton for $8 and it had all these tiny back roads marked that the GPS never shows. Taking the scenic route through rural Ohio turned a boring 6 hour drive into something I actually enjoyed, so now I grab any old atlas I see under $5. Anybody else use outdated reference books for real life, or am I just weird?

Ha! That's a solid find. I read somewhere that mapmakers used to hide tiny fake towns on their maps just to catch people who copied their work, and some of those little dots still show up for decades. Kinda makes you wonder if you've ever driven through a town that didn't actually exist. But yeah, old atlases have a way of showing you the roads that phones just skip over. I do the same thing with old hiking guides, they point out trails that got taken off the newer apps.
