Took me forever to stop buying books by their cover art alone
I used to grab anything with a cool painting on the front, which got me stuck with a lot of cheesy old romance novels. Now I flip straight to the copyright page and check the printing date first, has anyone else switched up their thrift store strategy like that?

Oh man, I gotta disagree hard here. The cover art is half the fun of thrift store hunting! I actually seek out the worst, most dramatic covers on purpose because those usually hide the best cheesy plots. I've found some hilarious space operas and wild 80s thrillers just by grabbing the gaudiest thing on the shelf, never would have touched them if I judged by the copyright page. Don't you think you're missing out on some hidden gems by being so strict about the printing date?

Got a buddy who grabbed some random book with a half-naked cowboy and a dragon on it just for laughs. Turned out to be a legit great post-apocalyptic story, he still talks about it years later. So yeah, I'm with you on this one, the ugly covers are half the treasure.
