Warning: stop buying those "like new" ex-library hardcovers online

Last week I snagged a supposedly great condition library discard of a King book for $4 plus shipping off a reseller site. When it got here the whole thing smelled like a wet ashtray and the spine had that weird clear tape all over it. I figured ex-library copies were a steal but now I'm stuck with something I can't even read without gagging. Is there a good way to tell if a listing is actually a library copy before you pay for it, or should I just stick to thrift stores where I can inspect first?
