I used to snap spoons over my knee, now I twist them with pliers and the difference is night and day
For about two years I would brace a spoon on my knee and lean into it, which usually just folded the bowl flat or sent the handle flying across the kitchen. Last month I switched to gripping each end with a pair of Knipex Cobras and twisting slow, and now I get a clean spiral every time with no sharp edges. Does anyone else think the knee snap is overrated, or am I just bad at it?
The part about the handle flying across the kitchen is the real issue here and nobody talks about it. Snapping over your knee puts all the force into one spot at the bend, so the metal fails there instead of bending. That's why you get flat bowls and flying handles, it's not you being bad at it, it's the method asking too much of one point. Twisting with two grips spreads the stress along the whole length of the spoon, which is why you get a smooth spiral and no sharp edges. The knee snap works for videos because it looks like brute strength, but it's a worse way to bend metal. Slow twisting always wins over a quick snap for control.
