TIL that bending silverware slowly hides cracks better than snapping it fast
I noticed this after breaking about 30 forks from the thrift store on 5th Street over the past couple months. If you bend one slowly, the cracks spread quiet and you can feel tiny pops near the neck before it gives, but if you jerk it fast it just snaps and hides the weak spot. I tested this on 12 pieces last Tuesday and 9 of the slow bends showed visible stress marks at the base. The fast ones fooled me into thinking the metal was stronger than it was. Does anyone else check for those little stress lines before a bend or do you just go for it?
