20 years of turning wrenches and I just learned I've been doing chain lube wrong

Had a customer bring in a 90s Bianchi last week that was caked in gunk. I told him he was using way too much lube and he goes "well you told me to lube every 100 miles 15 years ago." That's when it hit me: I've been drenching chains and wiping off the excess for two decades when you're really supposed to apply one drop per roller and let it soak in. Anyone else have a basic thing they did backwards for years before someone called them out on it?

Isn't that just how everything works though? Overthinking simple stuff.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think it's always just overthinking. Sometimes the "simple stuff" is actually pretty deep if you stop to look at it. Like, a lot of things get called simple just because people have been told not to question them, you know? If everyone just accepted everything at face value, we'd still be using leeches for medicine. I'm not saying overthink every little thing, but I think there's a middle ground between "overthinking" and actually caring about the details.
