Broke a Park Tool chain whip on a stuck cassette last Tuesday

I was wrestling with a seized cassette lockring on an old Trek from the 90s. The chain whip just snapped at the handle, right where it meets the chain. Customer had cranked it on with an impact gun I think. Had to run to the shop down the street to borrow their breaker bar setup. Anyone else had a tool fail like that on you mid-job?

Had a similar thing happen with a set of pliers last month (not the same tool, but the same sort of failure). It's funny how we expect tools to just work, especially the basic ones, but they all have their breaking point. That moment when the handle snaps or the jaw twists, it always catches you off guard because you're in the middle of the job, not thinking about the tool failing. Makes you wonder about all the other stuff we just trust without question, like your car's brakes or the chair you're sitting on, right up until they don't work anymore.

And here's the thing - how many times do we actually check our tools before we use them? I'm guilty of grabbing something and just assuming it'll hold up because it always has before. But isn't that exactly the mindset that gets you hurt when something finally gives out? The chair analogy hits home because I sat down on a broken stool at a client's house last week and didn't think twice about it until I almost hit the floor. Makes you wonder if we're all just one failed hinge away from a really bad day, you know?
