Had a customer bring in a bike with a seized seatpost after 3 years in a shed

Last week in the shop, a guy brought in a vintage road bike he found in his garage. The aluminum seatpost was totally stuck, and he'd already tried hitting it with a hammer. We had to cut it out with a hacksaw, which took about two hours. The frame was fine, but the post was a total loss. Anyone else have a good trick for stuck posts that doesn't risk the frame?

Cutting it out with a hacksaw sounds brutal. I always thought heat was the best fix, but I saw a frame get wrecked that way. Now I just go straight to the penetrating oil and patience.

Is it really that big a deal, @juliaa25?

Tried the patience route once and fell asleep in my chair for three hours. Woke up with a face full of rust dust and the bolt still stuck tight. Guess I'm stuck between being too impatient for patience or too clumsy for power tools.
