Old mechanic told me to never use WD40 on a chain, I laughed at him for 5 years

After ruining three chains in two seasons on my commuter bike in Chicago, I finally listened to that crusty guy from the shop I used to go to. He said it strips the internal grease and now I'm out $120 in parts. Anyone else learn a lesson the hard way from ignoring old advice like that?

Honestly, I did the same thing with my bike chain and thought I knew better than the old timers. Ngl, I went through two chains in one winter before I finally accepted that WD40 just isn't made for that job. Tbh, it's one of those lessons where you gotta burn your own money to really believe the advice.

Did you buy all those chains from the same place? I'm wondering if it was the WD40 or if you just got unlucky with some cheap junk.
