Pro tip: always check the customer's 'fix' before you start

Last week, a guy brought in his mountain bike saying the brakes were 'a bit soft' after he tried to fix them himself. I popped the wheel off and found he'd replaced the brake pads with two pieces of a flip flop, glued in place with what smelled like super glue. Has anyone else found a truly bizarre homemade 'repair' that actually made the problem worse?
