Saw the 10,000th derailleur hanger bent the same way today

I keep a tally in my head of common repairs we get at the shop. Lost count of how many times someone leans their bike against a wall and the hanger folds inward. It's always that one specific angle. Has anyone figured out a way to explain this to customers without them looking at you like you're making it up?

You ever notice how people treat their bikes like shopping carts? Just lean it anywhere and hope for the best. Had a guy come in last week, hanger bent at a perfect 45 degree angle. Swears he never touched it. I just nodded and fixed it. Best method I found is showing them the actual part and how thin the aluminum is. Hold it up to the light. Tell them it's designed to break exactly there on purpose. Saves the frame. They still look at me like I'm trying to sell them a bridge though.

Oh man, "swears he never touched it" - I've heard that one a hundred times too lol. It's like they think the bike bent itself leaning against the wall!
