Spent 3 hours chasing a ghost creak before finding it was the saddle rails

I was working on a customer's bike last Tuesday at the shop in Knoxville. They kept saying there was this clicking noise that only showed up when they pedaled hard out of the saddle. I checked the bottom bracket, the pedals, the chainring bolts, even the rear derailleur pulley. After trying everything, I finally sat on the bike myself and put some weight on the saddle. That's when I heard it. The saddle rails were slightly loose where they connect to the saddle clamp. A little grease and snugging it up fixed it in 30 seconds. Has anyone else had a creak that turned out to be something that simple?

Or maybe it was a spoke flexing under load the whole time.

Start by noticing how many of life's problems are just loose connections. The other day my neighbor spent two hours convinced his washing machine was dying because it was shaking like crazy during the spin cycle. Turned out one of the feet just needed a half turn to level it on the floor. Cars do it too - rattles that sound like the whole dash is coming apart but it's just a coin in the cupholder or a loose license plate screw. Makes you wonder how many big headaches we chase are really just something tiny we're overlooking.
