Two-line brake check feedback from a shop vet in Austin

A mechanic I respect told me to stop torquing brake bolts to spec and start using the lever pull method with a torque wrench as a backup... took me a week to unlearn old habits but my setups feel way more consistent now. Anyone else get told to ditch the printed numbers and trust the feel instead?

Whoa, hold on there. I gotta push back on this a little. Torque specs printed by the manufacturer exist for a reason, especially on brake components. Sure, the lever pull method can feel right after you've done a thousand of these, but feel is how you end up with a caliper bolt that's either too loose or way overstressed. A torque wrench is the backup for a reason, it's the one thing that gives you a real number instead of a guess. I'm not saying the feel method is totally useless, it's great for catching a bad thread or a weird spot, but I would never tell a new guy to ditch the numbers. The day you get a vibe wrong on a brake part is the day you learn a really expensive lesson. Keep the wrench, treat the feel as a second check, not the other way around.
