Finally got through The Wire after 3 failed attempts

I used to quit around episode 4 every time, couldn't keep the characters straight. This time I turned on closed captions and actually paid attention to the dialogue - finished the whole series in 2 weeks. Anyone else need a specific setup to get into a dense show?

That whole subtitles thing is a weird rabbit hole. What gets me is the autogenerated ones on certain streaming services will sometimes just give up mid-sentence and start describing the background music instead of translating the dialogue. Watched an entire episode of a French thriller once where the subs just said [tense string music intensifies] for like ten straight minutes.
