I keep seeing people skip the first episode of a show and it drives me nuts

Last week I was talking to my coworker about a series I just finished on Hulu. She said she started on episode 2 because episode 1 was slow. I asked her why she did that and she said she always skips pilots. But pilots set up all the character stuff and the world, you know? If you miss that foundation then later plot twists don't hit as hard. Has anyone else noticed people skipping the first episode and then missing something major?

Yeah, "pilots set up all the character stuff and the world" is exactly right. I had a friend who skipped the first episode of a mystery show, and then she spent half the season confused about who knew who and why certain relationships mattered. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience those first episode details usually come back around in a big way later on.

...and then she's asking you mid-season "wait why is that guy mad at her" and you're like because he found out she lied back in episode 1 buddy. @parkerkim is totally right about those details coming back around. I'm the type of guy who rewinds if I sneeze and miss three seconds of dialogue so skipping a whole episode feels like a crime against storytelling to me. But hey, maybe I'm just a control freak who needs every piece of the puzzle.
