My son told me to watch a show with subtitles on and it changed the game
I was visiting my son in Denver last month and we were watching a new drama. He turned the subtitles on, which I always thought was for people who couldn't hear well. He said, 'Mom, you catch so much more, the dialogue is just better.' I tried it for the whole episode and I swear I followed the plot twice as well. Now I watch everything with them on. Does anyone else find they enjoy shows more this way?

Subtitles are a crutch, plain and simple. If you can't follow a show without reading along, the problem isn't the sound mixing - it's your attention span. Good movies and TV are designed to be watched, not read.

My husband used to make fun of me for it, but I need the subtitles to understand half of what's going on. The sound mixing is so bad now, you either have whispering or explosions. I totally missed a major plot point in that spy show because I thought the guy said "secure the parrot" instead of "secure the package.

Oh my god, @claireg81, the parrot thing is too real. I just keep the subtitles on all the time now, it's the only way. My partner finally gave up and uses them too.
