Showerthought: why does every hostel I visit think a TV lounge is binge-worthy?

I stayed at a hostel in Nashville last weekend and they had this big 'binge watching room' with a giant TV and all these pillows. But the shows they had on rotation were just the same three seasons of The Office over and over. I get it's a classic but don't you think they could mix it up with something newer or more local? Has anyone else noticed hostels just picking the safest shows ever?

Wait are they actually paying for Netflix or just playing the same DVD box set over and over? Cause that feels like a whole different level of lazy. I had this one hostel in Portland that had a "movie night" every Wednesday and they always picked the same 5 movies from the 90s. Like I love Clueless as much as the next person but after the third time I was ready to throw a pillow at the TV. What kills me is they have all these travel shows and documentaries about local stuff they could be playing instead. It would be way more interesting than watching Jim look at the camera for the hundredth time.

Wait, have you actually asked the staff about it? In my experience sometimes there's a reason behind the weird movie choices. Maybe they have some kind of deal with a local video store or something. Or maybe the owner just really loves The Office and nobody wants to tell them it's getting old. I stayed at this place in Austin once that had a whole shelf of weird indie DVDs and I swear they never changed the lineup for six months. Turns out the guy who ran it was trying to sell the place and just stopped caring. But honestly I'd rather ask them directly than assume it's pure laziness. Your mileage may vary though.
