A horse farrier in Cheyenne handed me his rasp at 2am and it fixed my worst habit
Two summers back I was at a hammer-in outside Cheyenne and this old farrier watched me work the horn of my anvil for maybe 20 minutes without saying a word. Around 2am he just walked over, put his rasp in my hand, and said "your steel tells you when it's done, you just ain't listening." Now I do a slow lap around the anvil every few heats instead of forcing the shape, and I swear my edges come out cleaner, so what's the oddest thing a stranger taught you at a hammer-in?
Read something once about a blacksmith up in Montana who said the same thing, that you gotta let the metal rest instead of muscling it. Reminds me of that. Funny how the old timers just watch and wait for the right second to say one thing that sticks with you.
