Everyone swears by a propane forge for blade work but my old coal forge still beats it for even heat

I was trying to normalize a 1080 blade last Tuesday in my shop near Erie and the propane forge left a hot spot near the tang that warped the edge. Had to scrap that blank and start over, anyone else find coal just gives you better control on thin stock?

pretty forgiving" - @the_miles maybe, but gas forge airflow is the real variable nobody checks.

1180 steel is pretty forgiving, are you sure your technique wasn't the problem?
