Finally gave in and tried a coal forge after swearing by gas for 5 years
I was always that guy saying gas forges are cleaner and more consistent. But last Saturday I was at Ron's shop and he lit up his coal forge to show me how he does scroll ends. The way the steel moved under his hammer was just different. He handed me the tongs and after 3 heats I could feel the difference in how the metal behaved. Has anyone else made the switch and regretted it or is coal actually worth the mess?

Oh man, that first coal heat really does change things, doesn't it? But here's what I been wondering - did you notice if the scale was way worse or better on your steel? Cause I've heard some guys say coal leaves a messier surface that needs more grinding, and others say it actually helps the metal flow cleaner. I feel like that would be the deciding factor for me, since I hate spending time cleaning up scale after every heat.
