Found a trick for welding thin sheet metal without burning through

Been fighting with 18 gauge steel for weeks. Tried turning the heat way down and moving slower but kept making holes. A guy at the local shop said to try a copper backing bar behind the weld and it sucked the heat right out. Anyone else use scrap copper for this or is there a better method?

Yep, copper works great - I learned that right after burning through my fifth piece of metal and crying a little.
