I bought a cheap anvil stand kit online and it cost me $150 and a lot of frustration

I thought I was saving money getting a pre-cut steel tube stand kit instead of building my own. The metal was way thinner than the pictures showed, and the whole thing wobbled like crazy when I finally got my 150lb anvil on it. I had to spend another weekend and about $50 in extra steel plate to brace it all up solid. Honestly, I should have just built a proper wooden stand from the start like everyone says. Has anyone else been burned by a bad stand kit and what did you end up doing?

Honestly those kits can be a decent starting point though. Sometimes you just need a base to build off of, and tweaking it yourself gets you exactly what you want.

Yeah, a base to build off of is key. I've seen guys take a basic kit and turn it into something wild with just a few custom parts. Makes me think of wade_hall's shopping cart idea, which is basically the extreme version of that. You start with the frame and just go nuts from there. What was the craziest thing you've seen built from a simple kit?
