Just wasted $200 on a 'bargain' anvil that turned out to be cast iron junk

Saw it listed online, looked okay in the pictures. Seller said it was 'heavy duty' and 'great for a beginner'. Got it home, took one solid hit with a hammer, and a chunk the size of a quarter just sheared right off the edge. It's basically decorative. Should have known the price was too good. Anyone have a good method for spotting a fake anvil before you buy, besides the obvious ring test?

What did the seller's ad actually say?

That's just a $200 lesson, right?

Yeah that's a classic scam, sorry man. The ring test is good, but you gotta check the edges too. Run a file across the top face in a few spots, a real steel anvil will barely scratch. If it cuts in easy, it's soft junk. Also look for a clean, sharp Hardy hole. Cast iron ones often have rough, rounded edges there. Lifting it helps too, a real anvil feels way heavier for its size than a cheap casting.
