My first pass at a 20 inch damascus billet only took 7 tries this time

Used to spend half a Saturday fighting uneven welds and cold shuts, but after I switched to a slower forge heat and fluxed every third fold instead of guessing, the last billet came out clean enough to see the pattern on the first grind, so what did you all change that actually shortened your learning curve?
