My old hammer handle finally gave out after two years, so I made a new one from hickory and the swing feels totally different

That "swing feels totally different" thing is real. My buddy swapped his old fiberglass axe handle for a custom hickory one. First time he split wood with it, he overswung and nearly threw his back out. Took him a whole weekend to get used to the new balance, said it was like learning to throw a baseball again.

I get the "learning to throw a baseball" part, but a whole weekend? That seems like a lot for just an axe handle.

Honestly, I get where you're coming from, but I think a whole weekend makes total sense. If you've been swinging one way for years, your muscle memory is basically hardwired. It's not just about the weight, it's the flex and the rebound that throw everything off. I remember swapping from a steel splitting maul to an aluminum one and I kept overcorrecting for like two days straight. Felt like I was learning to walk again, not just swing an axe. So yeah, a weekend sounds about right to me.
