My old mentor in Akron told me to watch his hands, not his hammer
Back when I was learning at his shop off Kenmore Blvd around 2008, he noticed me staring at the hammer head instead of the metal and just said 'the hammer lies, the steel talks.' Took me years to really get what he meant about reading heat and color instead of force, but I still hear it when I'm at the anvil. Any of you had a teacher drop one of those lines that took a while to land?
The hammer lies, the steel talks" is about as true as it gets. My old timer used to tell me to watch the fire and not the clock, and it took me burning plenty of good steel before that one sank in.
