Quenched a knife in used motor oil, big mistake on Tuesday

I ran out of canola oil and figured old engine oil from my pickup would work for quenching a small blade. The smoke was unbelievable, filled my whole shop in about 3 minutes, and the blade came out with this awful sticky film that took forever to grind off. Plus my wife smelled it from inside the house and yelled, 'what on earth is burning out there?' Lesson learned, I'm sticking to proper quench oil or even water for practice pieces. Anyone else have a weird quench liquid story that backfired?
