Saw a guy at a demo last week using a propane forge for blades - couldn't tell if he was smart or just cutting corners
He said coal is dead and propane gives you more control, but I watched him struggle with even heat on a 12 inch blade and wondered if old school charcoal beats convenience every time - which side are you on for serious work?

Oh man I tried propane once and totally botched it. Coal all the way for real blades.
