Spent $150 on a "vintage" anvil that turned out to be a cast iron boat anchor
Saw this beat up anvil at an estate sale in Tucson last month. Old guy swore it was his granddad's from the 1800s. Paid $150 cash. Got it home, hit it with a wire wheel, and realized it had anchor flukes ground off the bottom and some idiot carved a fake "Fisher" logo into it with a chisel. Thing rings like a dinner bell when you tap it. No rebound at all. Now it's a doorstop in my shop. Has anyone else fallen for a fake anvil and how do you spot them fast?

Man that's EXACTLY why I always bring a magnet and a ball bearing to test rebound.

Does that ball bearing trick really tell you more than just flexing it by hand, @grantthomas?
