Tried a coal forge after 5 years of propane
Always thought coal was messy overrated nonsense until I borrowed a buddy's setup last weekend. Now I'm looking at used coal forges on Craigslist - anyone else find certain projects just work better with coal?

Buddy of mine swore by propane for years, then tried coal for a knife he was making with some old wrought iron. He said the coal heat let him get that metal way softer and more workable than his gas forge ever did... something about the longer heat soak. He's been using a hybrid setup now, coal for the heavy stuff and gas for quick jobs.

Heat soak makes a huge difference, coal holds temp way steadier than gas ever could.
