Used to forge weld with borax every time, now I switched to anhydrous borax and it's a completely different game

Completely different game" is right. My buddy Gary switched to anhydrous last spring and called me all excited. Said his first weld with it came out so clean he actually checked to make sure his hood wasn't playing tricks on him. He'd been fighting with regular borax for years, getting inclusions and having to redo joints. Now he's one of those guys who acts like he discovered fire.

Did Gary ever mention what he was using for a flux before the switch? I tried anhydrous once on a repair job and honestly it felt like overkill for what I was doing. Regular borax has its quirks but you learn to work with them, you know? I've been getting clean joints for years without the extra expense and hassle of keeping anhydrous dry. Different strokes I guess, but calling it a game changer seems a bit much when plenty of us get by just fine the old way.
