Warning: My old coal forge almost burned down the shed last week

I was working late in my backyard shop in Bellingham, trying to finish a set of tongs. The firepot had a small crack I'd been ignoring for months. Last Tuesday, a hot coal fell right through onto the dry wood floor. I had to dump my whole quench bucket to stop it. Anyone else had a close call with an old forge setup?

How bad did the floor look after you dumped the quench water? I had a piece of firebrick give out under my old forge. I went with what @eric_murphy36 said and put down a full sheet of thin brick under the whole thing. It was way easier than trying to patch the firepot, and now I don't have to stare at the floor the whole time I'm working. That sinking feeling when a hot coal drops is the worst.

Had a similar scare with my old rivet forge. I ended up lining the bottom with a sheet of thin firebrick. It's cheap insurance and catches those falling bits.
