Serious question, did phone cameras make us worse at reading blurry pics or better?
I keep going back and forth on this and it's driving me nuts. About 6 months ago I dug out my old point and shoot from a drawer in the garage, mostly to test a theory, and started shooting the same bird feeder shots I take with my phone. When I zoom into a grainy shot from the phone, the software has clearly been guessing at the edges, so what looks like a wing shape at 4x zoom is really just an artifact the phone invented. With the old camera, the blur is honest, just soft and smeared, and I can actually trace the outline by eye. I posted two near identical shots of a hawk on the fence last Tuesday, one from each camera, and the guesses I got back split right down the middle, which tells me we're all reading different things into the same pixels. Now I keep both files open side by side just to see where the phone photo lies to me. Has anyone else noticed that some of the shapes you swear you see in a phone pic just vanish when you look at the unprocessed version?
